Sungula
Her measured stride slowed as the lioness rounded the pathway, catching sight of her pride up ahead.
Sungula means “first” in Tsonga.
In the heart of the African bush, the relentless heat draped over the landscape like a thick, sticky blanket. The pride, exhausted, lay aside in nearby cover as she appeared gradually along the tracks. The lioness was back from her reconnaissance, and she seemed alert.
For days, the lions had been tirelessly shadowing a large herd of Cape buffalo. They were now resting, hiding from the melting heat of the African sun to save their strength for later. She was the matriarch, and her powerful swaying steps slowed as she came up to her pride. She brought good news: the herd had also come to rest further down the gorge. Among them, a wounded buffalo had grown weaker, presenting an opportunity the lions couldn't ignore. However, they knew well the reputation of buffalo – fierce defenders, resolute in their defiance of these apex predators. This challenge required more than brute force; it demanded skill, patience, impeccable timing, and, above all, unyielding courage. This was something Sungula did not seem to lack.
With greetings exchanged, she turned and continued along the path to another vantage point where she could continue to observe the herd below.
That evening, the far-distant roars of the pride's success could be heard across the savannah. They had finally managed to take down their dinner, and with a respite from the earlier heat, they celebrated their success. One could imagine her amongst her peers and younger ones, savouring what had been a long and dangerous hunt. Similar to life's other moments, achievements don't come without effort. But, it seems, they may come more readily to individuals who possess the discipline and drive, much like Sungula, to persistently seek and utilise opportunities to the benefit of themselves and those they support.
