SHADOWLANDS 🐾

Out of the night, she quietly appears, her soft rumbling in rhythm with her swaying movement.

Pausing briefly, she eyes me before stepping back into the darkness. The extraordinary thing about the night in an African safari setting is its absolute stillness. There is an almost imperceptible sense of life everywhere, yet complete peace, occasionally shattered by an occasional roar or bark.

The sound of cracking bushes and soft, deep vocal rumblings close by made us aware of our passing visitors. She was an adolescent elephant calf, moving softly and silently beneath the canvas of stars above. Her mother, not far ahead, turned, all but disappearing back into the darkness that had enveloped us.

My wonderment with this capture was the juxtaposition of the enormity of this beautiful creature and its incredible ability to move so silently. She passed by in a few seconds, flashing in and out of my life. I would probably never see her again. I think if one thinks about this aspect of life, it's pretty much like us. We are surrounded by millions of people, yet we get to meet only a few. The solitude of life here, for me, was what made this shot special to me in all its momentary grandeur.
