Last Refuge

He was lying under a bushy tree when I first saw him at Drakenstein Lion Park, just outside Cape Town. At first, he was almost lost to the shade. The branches above him had broken the afternoon sun into uneven pieces, and most of his body sat in that deep, cool darkness you get under thick summer growth.
