MFUATILIAJI
MFUATILIAJI 👣
As the burning sunset paints the sky hues of orange, our tracker leads us deep into the heart of the African bush along the winding wilderness tracks.
"Mafuatiliaji" means "the tracker" in Swahili.
Bouncing along the rough terrain, our guide's eyes constantly scanned the ground and edges of the clay-soiled trail. Looking for "spoors," the African term for animal tracks, his knowledge of life passing all around us was incredible. Stopping when something caught his eye, he showed us in some detail the criss-crossing footprints or droppings, describing the creature, its speed, its direction, and sometimes the reason for the route they were taking. His insights were extremely useful, letting us imagine each story and event as if it had happened just minutes before or as if it had happened even days ago. At times, our vehicle would come to a halt, and he would jump off and casually stroll deep into the bush. After disappearing for a long time he would suddenly reappear somewhere further down the tracks calling us to continue in a specific direction where an opportunity for an encounter was possible.
It was truly special to have our guide and tracker. In the time we had, often thanks to him, we were able to witness the beauty and majesty of the African wilderness in a way that would have been impossible without his expert tracking skills. Many of the captures in my collection resulted from our trackers' ability to read and tell the African bush stories as they were happening in front of us. For this, I am grateful that we had both the experience and the opportunity to experience wild Africa in its storytelling form. A privilege I hope I am successfully able to share with you.
