Captured in a frozen moment, a Red Bishop Weaver springs into action, seizing a passing mayfly.

On a scorching mid-afternoon, I took a much-needed break, venturing out with my new telephoto lens in search of avian subjects. Perched on the edge of an embankment above a swamp-like area, I scanned the surrounding reeds, my gaze landing on a male Red Bishop Weaver perched about 60 feet (20 meters) away on a weathered old tree stump. With keen interest, he watched the world go by while other weavers flitted about, tending to their nests or quenching their thirst in the nearby pools of water.

Focusing my lens, I marvelled at the intricate details of his plumage and the occasional turns of his head as he tracked the movement of passersby. Anticipating his flight, I positioned myself for the perfect shot, but time seemed to stand still. Despite the heat, I remained patient, hoping to capture at least a glimpse of his flight.

As if hearing my silent plea, the Red Bishop Weaver suddenly launched into the air, executing a swift turn as if having second thoughts. It was in that fleeting moment that a small mayfly crossed his path, catching his attention. In the blink of an eye, he snapped it up with astonishing speed. Miraculously, the mayfly seemed to slip from his grasp, spiralling down into the reeds, perhaps seeking refuge. While I'll never know if he managed to retrieve his prey, this brief yet mesmerising moment with nature was a well-earned reward for patiently observing my subject long enough.
