FOGGY MORNING
A rambling mist softly floats across the cold lagoon, creating a silvery veneer as a flamingo steps by.
A soft mist drifted across the cold, still surface of the lagoon, like a veil floating in the calm. There was not even a whisper of wind, yet the fog gently rolled sideways, casting a ghostly glow above the silvery water. Along the shallower embankments, birds had gathered, taking advantage of the exposed mudflats and the banquet laid out by the receding tide. Flocks of flamingos had spread themselves out, each one choosing a spot to continue their graceful hunt for food. An occasional soft murmur, or the distant honking of a flamingo, gently interrupted the heavy silence that seemed to drape over the landscape.
Nearby, a pair of Pied Avocets touched down, landing lightly on the sandy bank. Their delicate, upturned bills skimmed the water’s surface as they searched for tiny invertebrates, completely focused on their task. Out of the mist, a lone flamingo appeared—tall and elegant, his pink feathers glowing softly against the pale fog. He moved with purpose, each step slow and deliberate as he waded along the edge of the shallow shore, completely indifferent to the avocets nearby.
His long legs seemed to glide through the water as he let out a low, echoing call, almost as if speaking to the mist itself. In response, the distant honking of his flock echoed back to him, faint but distinct. Without pause, he continued along, disappearing back into the fog as swiftly as he had appeared, his graceful form fading from view until there was nothing left but the whisper of his call, hanging softly in the air.
The lagoon returned to its stillness, the avocets now alone again, still busily searching for their next meal as if the flamingo had never passed by at all.

Avocets are also an iconic species for conservation, and where they were once extinct, seem to have since made a successful comeback.
