Her arrival received a whoop of cries as the hyenas engaged in their traditional greeting ceremony of squeals and groans.

Xeweta means to “gesture” in Tsonga.

Before the tender reunion could take place, a ritual that transcends generations and strengthens bonds unfolded.

The matriarch, weary yet determined, emerged from the horizon, her figure outlined against the fading light. She was greeted first by the guardian of the den, a loyal companion whose role was crucial in the cub's upbringing. The two adults engaged in a traditional greeting, each carefully examining the other's scent, reaffirming their bond and hierarchy within the clan.

With the formalities complete, the matriarch turned her attention to her cub, who was now beside herself with joy beneath. The mother showered her little one with affection, nuzzling and licking her fur, reaffirming the unbreakable bond between them. After a long journey out in search of sustenance, the matriarch had returned, her efforts ensuring that her cub would be nourished and cared for.

Hyena - The Greeting Ritual Explained

Did you know? Spotted hyenas live in large clans with a highly structured society, where females dominate! These clans function as fission-fusion societies, meaning members are often solitary or in small groups.

When spotted hyenas meet, they have a unique ritualised greeting. Two individuals stand parallel to each other, facing in opposite directions. They then lift their hind legs and sniff or lick each other's anogenital regions. What's fascinating is that during these greetings, both males and females prominently display their erect 'penises'.

Female spotted hyenas have a unique anatomy, with fused outer labiae and a 'pseudo-penis' formed by the clitoris, closely resembling the male penis and capable of erection.

During these greetings, subordinates often signal submission with gestures that may not be reciprocated by the dominant hyena. This complex social behaviour is just one of the many fascinating aspects of spotted hyena society!
