Sunday Catch 2

The heron skilfully lifts its reward as the fish puts up one final, desperate struggle.

The early sunlight bathes the river morning, casting a soft misty radiance on the setting. Local birds have completed their morning routines. A vibrant Kingfisher, a jewelled performer in aquatic acrobatics, had deftly dived to seize unsuspecting minnow near the riverbanks and nearby spoonbills and egrets were navigating back to shore through floating vegetation, having satisfied their hunger. Meanwhile, a magnificent grey heron had perched on a massive fallen tree, enjoying the sun's embrace while grooming its wet feathers from earlier unsuccessful attempts at catching a meal.

Suddenly, the heron's sharp eyes detected a gentle disturbance in the shallows ahead. An unusually large carp, navigating the river's curve, unaware of the impending danger, had created ripples to return to deeper water. With no escape route except past the vigilant heron, the carp had made a gradual U-turn unaware of its fate. Displaying the poise of a seasoned hunter, the heron silently descended into the water. With a final flick of its powerful tail, the carp drifted closer - within the heron's striking range. In a flurry of water and feathers, the heron's spear-like beak plunged beneath the surface, followed by a moment of stillness. Gradually, the triumphant heron raised its catch from the watery depths, the prize firmly impaled on its formidable beak, and slowly stepped to shore.
