He contemplatively chews the dewy late afternoon savannah grass, his eyes now locked on my presence.

Lexikulu means "Big" in Tsonga.

The soft mists rolled cloud-like through the massive herd of African buffalo. Numbering a few hundred, they had paused their trek through the bushy grasslands and hills in search of fresher fields nearby. It was a hauntingly beautiful sight as the late sun illuminated some of the large groups with a scattering of individuals.

In the midst of this tranquil scene, there was one particular buffalo that caught my attention. He seemed contemplative, almost as if lost in thought, as he slowly chewed on the offering of the savannah. His eyes, fixed on me, held an air of curiosity mixed with a hint of uncertainty. Though I could sense a certain wariness in his gaze, I was initially comfortable with his relaxed demeanour as he continued to feed. With his mouth grinding rhythmically, his gaze remained locked on our presence. He shifted suddenly and feeling a sudden sense of caution, we decided to slowly withdraw. The unspoken exchange of looks between us conveyed a mutual understanding. His curiosity satisfied, he turned his massive body and pressed his way back to the herd, joining the others as their collective bellowing urged them onward.

Buffalo are formidable creatures, and encountering them in an agitated state is an experience one should avoid. With astonishing speed, their passive demeanour can transform into a thunderous charge, unleashing the full force of their one-ton strength. Even the mightiest predators of the African plains hold them in deep respect, particularly when they band together in large herds. The protection of the young and elderly members is at the heart of their unity. When threatened in any way, these creatures become even more vigilant, making them one of the most dangerous creatures in nature.

Despite their potential danger, I find the buffalo's colossal size and magnificent horns incredibly fascinating. Their appearance exudes a unique beauty that is not defined by conventional notions of prettiness but rather by their commanding presence. I hope this portrayal, captures a little of the essence of their awe-inspiring nature and the profound impression they can leave on those who witness them.
